Online Talk, January 14th: The Independent Uyghur Tribunal

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

The Uyghur Tribunal is a UK-based people’s tribunal investigating the People’s Republic of China’s alleged genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghur and other Muslim populations. Upon request of the World Uyghur Congress, the Uyghur Tribunal was established by Sir Geoffrey Nice, QC, and launched on September 3rd, 2020.

We are delighted to invite you to our online panel discussion on Thursday January 14th, 2021 with our two guests Sir Geoffrey Nice QC and Marilena Stegbauer. Prior registration is necessary and can be done here. The panel will take place on the online platform Zoom. We will send you a link via e-mail to get into the virtual conference a few hours before it starts.

Sir Geoffrey Nice QC is the Chair of the Uyghur Tribunal and is one of the leading UK human rights barristers. He will share his expertise on the Tribunal’s activities and functioning, while giving us insights on the role of people’s tribunals in cases of lacking involvement of formal courts such as the International Court of Justice.

Marilena Stegbauer is a London-based human rights consultant charged with running the secretariat of the Uyghur Tribunal and assisting counsel in analysing evidence. As a UC Freiburg alumna, she kindly initiated the event and will act as a co-moderator during the talk.

In addition to discussing the Uyghur Tribunal, both will share their expertise on International Criminal Law and its articulation with Human Rights within the International Community. They will talk about the work of the Uyghur Tribunal specifically, while introducing us to the role of People’s Tribunals in general.

Don't forget to sign up! We are looking forward to seeing you on January 14th!
